How to Get Your GLP-1 Covered by Insurance
Brand-name GLP-1s can exceed $1,000/mo without coverage, so getting insurance to pay is the single biggest lever on cost. Four things decide whether you succeed:
- Diagnosis matters most. Plans cover the diabetes-labeled drugs (Ozempic, Mounjaro) far more often than the weight-loss ones (Wegovy, Zepbound).
- Prior authorization is almost always required — a provider that handles the paperwork for you is worth a lot.
- Check your formulary before you commit, and ask about step-therapy requirements.
- Appeal denials. A first denial is common; a well-documented appeal frequently succeeds.
Among direct-access providers, Ivim Health and Midi Health both accept insurance and can help navigate prior authorization — and both include lab testing and dietitian access. If your employer offers a sponsored program, eMed and Omada Health deliver GLP-1 care at little or no out-of-pocket cost.
If coverage falls through, compounded semaglutide from Ivim Health (from $149/mo) is usually cheaper than paying cash for a brand-name prescription anyway.
