Unused GLP-1 pens are kept in the refrigerator at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C) and must not be frozen. The time allowed out of the refrigerator differs by product. Per the sources we read: Mounjaro single-dose pens and vials may be kept unrefrigerated for up to a total of 21 days at no more than 86°F; Zepbound single-dose pens, per the manufacturer, for up to 21 days; Wegovy pens, per the manufacturer, for up to 28 days between 46°F and 86°F in the original carton; and an in-use Ozempic pen for 56 days at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Always follow the label and pharmacy instructions that came with your own pen.

Pens left in a hot car, a forgotten lunch bag or an airline carry-on cause real worry, and the rules vary by brand. This article collects what the prescribing information and manufacturer pages say, shows where the numbers differ, and flags what we could not confirm. It does not replace the instructions from your pharmacist or prescriber.
Storage rules by product

| Ozempic pen | Refrigerator, 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F); not in the freezer or directly next to the cooling element; keep in the original carton | After first use, the pen can be stored for 56 days at controlled room temperature (15°C to 30°C) or in the refrigerator; protect from excessive heat and sunlight; keep the cap on when not in use | Ozempic prescribing information (revised 05/2026) |
| Mounjaro single-dose pen or vial | Refrigerator, 2°C to 8°C; protect from heat and light; store in the original carton | If needed, unrefrigerated at no more than 30°C (86°F) for up to a total of 21 days; discard after a total of 21 days at room temperature | Mounjaro prescribing information (revised 08/2026) |
| Mounjaro multi-dose vial or KwikPen | Unopened, in the refrigerator, 2°C to 8°C | Throw away an opened multi-dose vial or KwikPen after a total of 30 days at room temperature (the label also says 30 days after first use or after 4 weekly doses, even if medicine is left) | Same label |
| Zepbound single-dose pen | Refrigerator, 36°F to 46°F, not exposed to freezing temperatures | Can stay at room temperature up to 21 days; discard if not used within 21 days after removal; do not return to the refrigerator; safe up to 86°F, away from direct light and heat | Zepbound manufacturer instructions page |

Two cautions about this table. First, we could read section 16 only for the Ozempic and Mounjaro labels; for Zepbound and Wegovy the storage section of the full label was cut off in the copies we could access, so those rows rely on the manufacturers’ own pages. Second, vials and KwikPens have different rules from single-dose pens, so check which device you hold. We did not verify storage rules for the Wegovy or Foundayo tablets.
Why the cold chain matters
These products are proteins or peptides dissolved in liquid, and the labels tie storage limits to heat, light and freezing: the Mounjaro label says “Do not freeze MOUNJARO. Do not use MOUNJARO if frozen,” and says to protect it from heat and light. The Ozempic label tells users to protect the pen from excessive heat and sunlight. The labels do not give a reason beyond this, and we do not claim a specific loss of potency.
Practical travel steps based on the labels
- Count your days. For products with a total-days limit, write the date a pen first leaves the refrigerator on the carton. The Mounjaro label describes the limit as a total of 21 days, so repeated trips add up.
- Keep the carton. Wegovy, Mounjaro and Ozempic guidance all refer to the original carton or protection from light.
- Avoid the freezer edge. The Ozempic label says not to store the pen directly adjacent to the refrigerator cooling element. In a cooler, keep pens from direct contact with ice packs, since the labels say not to freeze.
- Do not use a frozen or damaged pen. The manufacturer pages say to discard a frozen pen. Wegovy’s page also says not to use a pen if the liquid is not clear, if any part is broken, or if the expiration date has passed.
- Do not guess for compounded products. Compounded vials and syringes are not covered by these labels. Ask the dispensing pharmacy for its beyond-use date and storage instructions, and see our guide on compounded semaglutide versus Wegovy.
If a pen was stored wrongly
The labels and pages we read give limits, not a recovery procedure for pens that exceeded them. If a pen was frozen, the manufacturers say to discard it. If it sat above the stated temperature or beyond the stated days, call your pharmacist, who can advise using the manufacturer’s product information. For what to do about a late injection, see missed GLP-1 doses and what the labels say. If you are unsure a pen is genuine, see how to check your pen against the FDA’s counterfeit alerts.
Common questions
Can I put a pen back in the refrigerator after it has been out?
It depends on the product. The Zepbound manufacturer page says a pen that has come to room temperature should not be returned to the refrigerator. The Mounjaro label counts days unrefrigerated as a running total. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure.
Does the 28-day Wegovy figure apply to Ozempic?
No. The Ozempic label we read gives a 56-day in-use period after first use, a different rule. Do not apply one product’s number to another.
Is leaving a pen out to warm before injecting allowed?
Wegovy’s page says you may consider leaving the pen out to reach room temperature before use, with the cap on.
